Greg, and Larry, I've checked my Replogle Globe again to see more precisely what areas will be covered. It really is everywhere except the very south and very north. Alaska gets covered too, but Globalstar's GPS won't be good for the extreme edge of coverage as there will only be a couple of satellites in contact at a time.

This idea of promoting Iridium as being universal coverage while Globalstar is not is really wrong. If you are betting your money on that Larry, you really should take the time to see exactly how big an area is covered by each satellite. To make it easy for you, if you find the USA on the map, then one satellite over Pierre, South Dakota can easily "see" a handset anywhere in USA or Canada. And that is still giving some elevation [about 10 deg] above the horizon. Out on the ocean you get the whole north Atlantic covered with one satellite. Pretty good coverage! If you look around the world you will see that there are no areas of ocean where where such a big area has no populated islands. Even Scott Base only just misses out on coverage.

A few gateways, on major populated islands, will cover all oceans. Forget about the lonely rocky outcrops, tropical storms and sailing out to nowhere to upgrade the electronics. It is a non-issue!

Yes Greg, your Alaskan explorers will not be out of contact if they can see the southern sky without a mountain in the way. Of course, Iridium will work in mountainous areas because it goes right over the top of everywhere. So I guess Iridium would be the right choice for rescue in mountainous areas in the far north. But out on the oceans, Globalstar will be fine.
