I heard the debate on the radio. Kerry had the edge style-wise but his positions were still incoherent, e.g., for bilateral and multi-lateral negotiations with North Korea which desperately wants bilateral negotiations. Dubya had the clear edge in terms of substance because he has a reasonable plan that is designed to win.

Notice how Dubya's plan, which hinges on turning Afghanistan and Iraq into democratic allies in the fight against terrorism, expands his options in Iran and North Korea? You can disagree with the details but that is an audacious plan that is being implemented.

Kerry offered nothing that could not be easily stymied by our enemies and fair-weather allies. And you can easily tell by the way it limits his options in Iran and North Korea.

He has already telegraphed his weak resolve to the rebels in Iraq so anything he says only reinforces that the fact his will is weak and he will crumble under pressure. His indecisiveness also have the practical effect of reducing the domestic pressures on the mullahs in Iran from a US-friendly Iranian public which is probably why the mullahs are going ahead with their ostensibly peaceful nuclear program no matter what the UK, France and Germany say about it. That also the reason why North Korea is stalling and insisting on that same kind of bilateral negotiations and concessions they were able to get with the Clinton administration.
