Australia's role in Iraq rated a single passing mention in the US presidential debate, with Democratic challenger John Kerry saying Bush had failed to put together "a grand coalition" to fight the war.

Kerry argued that the Bush should not have ordered the invasion without United Nations support and a larger military alliance.

"When we went in, there were three countries: Great Britain, Australia and the United States," Kerry said.

"That's not a grand coalition. We can do better."

Bush replied: "actually, you forgot Poland. And now there are 30 nations involved, standing side by side with our American troops.

"I honour their sacrifices, and I don't appreciate it when a candidate for president denigrates the contributions of these brave soldiers.

"You cannot lead the world if you do not honour the contributions of those who are with us.

"You call (coalition members) the coerced, bribed. That's not how you bring people together."

Kerry has said that if elected, he would be better able to bring partners into the coalition to stabilise and rebuild Iraq.
