I dont put much stock in polls but i do believe that kerry took his first step back into the race. There are still two more debates left and bush knows he didnt perform up to par. He looked exhausted to me and it think both the presidency and this campaign are taking their toll. After screwing up for two months kerry finally had a good day style wise. But look to his answers on iran and N. Korea and even re: NY and the supposed subway shutdown(didnt happen) his policies seemed weird to me. Why would you have direct talks with NK when there is a coalition of 5 nations directly affected in the middle of a negotiating process with NK? I dont get it.
As for iran he made factual errors re: plutonium vs enriched uranium and over which president initiate sanctions. I think i am right on that one.
Also on iraq, there was no clear policy statement by either. It was stay the course vs. bring in chirac & co.
Bush looked unhappy with kerry in his answers. His expression seemed to say--you are knowingly lying about my record in iraq. And Kerry when attacked took the opposite tax. He looked like FDR (the happy warrior) shaking his head yes while listening to bush attack him for flip flopping. All that was missing was the cigaret holder dangling from his lips. At those moments it seemed Kerry was mocking bushes answers. In fact he wasnt--he was just using debating 101 tactics of smiling and taking notes as if he were back in school debating a buddy about the meaning of life. To middle america it might have looked more like arrogance and mocking. Meaninful polls come out sunday/monday. I expect the lead to narrow a bit. Next debate may actually be the big one. Bush knowing he flopped last night will be out for bear and well rested. Mike
