I live in a remote area.

A couple days ago the supplier for propane installed a wireless device at the tank that automatically calls the propan supplier once the tank reaches critical level.
It also includes a little box next to the phone that shows the current propan level.
First I thought it's somewhat "silly" but after thinking twice I figured the supplier can now in real time figure out usage rates and hence future demand going forward. The wireless device is being installed at all customers.
So the propane supplier can manage its inventory, purchasing plans more efficiently as well optimizing the logistic for delivering the propane because he can plan delivery ahead of time and has not to wait for the last minute phone call when somebody is running out of propane the next day which could mean he has to drive quite a bit just to serve one customer which could result in higher delivery cost.
The device was free of charge and in addition I recieve a
5 cent discount.
