Some comments on the 3 free posts a day feature:

On the positive side, it's brought some good new posters. On the negative side, there are a lot more spam posts. Any ideas about how to handle these?

One idea is you could have an "auto-kill" feature whereby a post by a free-poster disappears if it gets rated as "spam" by some number of users. Hopefully that wouldn't be abused by people who simply disagreed with the post. An alternative might be to "deputize" a few hundred responsible users and give them the ability to delete spam by free users.

Conversely, I'd like to see some sort of rating feature that could allow a "free" poster more posts than three if his/her posts get a high rating.

In fact, an interesting marketing idea would be to run a competition where SI members get to vote for full memberships based on the quality of the free posts that people make. Say the top 100 (or whatever) vote-getters receive a free full membership. By definition these are posters everyone here thinks are valuable contributors that would positively contribute to SI.
