The reason Bush gave for invading Iraq was to enforce UN resolutions requiring Iraq to destroy it's chemical and biological weapons. Since the UN inspectors couldn't find these banned weapons, and Colin Powell provided no proof in his UN testimony that they existed, most of our allies declined to participate.

Only after it became clear that there were no WMD in Iraq did Bush flip-flop and sell the Iraq war a a battle against terrorism. This despite the fact that there was no connection between Saddam and 9/11 or any other terrorist attack against the United States. There are no Iraqi terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, and only vague and unsubstantiated, incidental reports of "contacts" between Iraqi officials and known terrorists. More terrorists trained in Florida than in Iraq.

Saddam wasn't stupid. Why would he engage in activities that would surely oust him from power? He HAD chemical and biological weapons during the first Gulf War and did not use them. Why? Because he was told that, if he used them, he was finished.

Only after the US invaded and screwed up the occupation did the various Iraqi factions start fighting the only way a resistance army can fight a powerful modern army - sniping, car bombs, roadside bombs suicide attacks.

Before the war, Eqypt's President Mubarak warned Bush that an invasion of Iraq would give birth to "a thousand new Osamas." George Bush ignored Mubarak, Bush Sr.'s written reasons for not occupying Iraq after Gulf War I, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's opinion that Iraq was not a threat and the advice of hundreds of other knowledgable friends and allies.

The result is what we have now - a situation far more dangerous than existed before the war... and the President who got us into this mess claiming that he is now the one most capable of getting us out.

The others refuse to take a stand against the terrrorists.
