A broker could tell you more accurately, but I understand that the Transfer Agent, who is responsible for actually tracking shares, will send a request to the broker to supply enough shares for the TA to put in a personal name certificate. The MM's control the "virtual" shares in their computers; the TA oversees the "real" shares which the certs represent.

I would welcome comments from someone in the biz, which I am not.

P.S. I think mtnres is signing people up. Or just look at the last list and claim the next number in sequence in a post.
