"Despite the obvious technological cluelessness (like, why do you keep bringing up Java three times, which is
sooo waay not used here)"

I've been a member since 1997. For most of that period, the first line on every page on SI has been something to the effect of "your java is disabled and your SI experience won't be so great as a result". Do you really feel it was bad behavior on my part to mention java settings in the course of the on topic discussion?

It's true I don't have any formal technical background. What I know about computers I've soaked up as a result of random self study and experimentation. If I can't figure out something on my own, I seek out persons who hopefully know more about it than I do and ask questions, which is what I did here, in a forum specifically set up for that purpose.

While I did eventually find the information I originally requested, the most remarkable thing I found in this forum was the level of rudeness in nearly every response. Do you people really act this way in public
