Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has deployed former CPA officials around the country to provide "uplifting accounts [of Iraq] with good news messages."

Of course, when spin fails, you can always intimidate your critics. Salon reports that an Army Reserve staff sergeant who wrote a critical report of the occupation, titled "Why We Cannot Win," now faces up to 20 years in prison for "disloyalty and insubordination." Never mind that military members "have a constitutional right to express their opinions pertaining to the issues before the public." Apparently, military commanders have bought into Bush's line that pessimism, rather than failed planning, is the problem in Iraq.
