This is a good argument. However, it takes years, decades, longer, to make changes in SA. Yet, I would argue that we've already begun to see positive changes there. Minute, I'll admit. But changes in a country that is not known for rapid change.

Like it or not, this war is long-term. 10 years. 20? Who knows. But what Bush understands is that it is essential that we not cave. The analogy to the war on drugs is probably not a bad one. But this is one we simply cannot afford to lose.

I see no evidence that Kerry has any game plan with respect to the broader war on terror. It is insufficient to just say, "We have to get bin Laden, then the war on terror is won." It simply isn't a factual view of the situation. In reality, we must stamp out terrorism and at the same time work toward elimination of the underlying cause.

OTOH, it is crystal clear that Bush does have a plan. And I strongly disagree with any complaint about making it a "war" vs. a "police action". This is a WAR, and it is critical that it be treated as such. I believe Kerry would have treated it as a police action, although there is no way in hell he would admit it now.
