Yes, I am glad to see these press releases as well. All of these news, of course, are not anything new. If anyone really researched 3DFX, these announcements could of been discovered. Now, since 3DFX has complete freedom to distribute news, we will be seeing the other 6 design wins before we see it from anywhere else. And thus, we will continue to receive positive news, each one causing the stock to go up slightly.
I found the following article from Game Center about 3DFX's position with Intel's AGP and it is very interesting. The VP of marketing says, "... We have a different scheme that we believe will give gamers what they want--which is the fastest thing they can get their hands on." This is why we have not seen 3DFX's support for the current version of AGP; 3DFX is working on something better and using AGP differently!

"No, AGP will not be the next big thing for gamers," says Andy Keane, vice president of marketing at 3Dfx. "We're not using AGP the way Intel specifies. They want to pull textures out of main memory. We believe there is a ceiling that can be attained by pulling textures out of main memory. I think there are other models that should be pursued. And I think this model has been oversold."
Keane, like many others, says that AGP could be a good thing for gaming. But this version is probably not the one. According to Keane, "There are other ways to use AGP, and that's why we have a wonderful industry, because people will do things different to find better models and solutions. We have a different scheme that we believe will give gamers what they want--which is the fastest thing they can get their hands on." |
