Economic ugliness, regardless of how it's manifested, always hurts everyone - even if you are able to profit financially during that period. Living in a society filled with suffering can take the enjoyment out of even the most delicious meal - at least for me. I'm not looking forward to things unraveling but like you I think it's inevitable. So I've tried to position my finances as well as I can without benefit of being a psychic. I'd feel better if I could wrangle an Australian passport or permanent residency. But the only passport I'm entitled to by petition is Switzerland which comes with the military tax until age 65. Nothing is perfect. Hopefully I can get by with just a USA passport.
