LOCAL NEWSPAPER The Democrat and Chronicle reports that Kodak will demand $1 billion in damages from Sun Microsystems in a landmark case over Java.

The paper said a federal jury ruled last Friday that Sun breached Kodak intellectual property when it introduced Java over 10 years ago.

The amount of damages will be decided by a judge in Rochester next week with Kodak wanting Sun Microsystems to shell out a not inconsiderable $1.06 billion.

The three week trial, said the paper, ended with the jury deciding that Sun had breached patents Kodak bought from Wang in 1997.

Last week Sun introduced its latest version of Java, but is unlikely to pay out $1.06 billion to the camera company without a further scrap. It won't want to pay Kodak such a huge chunk of its operating profit. µ
