That is a testimony to the chain of command. Soldiers are trained to follow the leader - without question. For the most part, that is a good thing.

Since the US armed forces is a volunteer one, it seems the vast majority of these members are patriots and have love of country as a driving force in how they conduct themselves.

Because of this, I think they tend to think more clearly about these issues. For example, 80% of them will not vote for Kerry for the simple reason that they listen very closely to what is going on and disagree with what Kerry says. This has nothing to do with chain of command or following orders as you imply in your statement.

Neville Chamberlain for example had very little support in the GB's armed forces, while Churchill was well respected.
