Comments On The Edwards Debate

Whether he wins on debating points or not, Edwards is going to win with the American people. If there are any points to be gained from this match, Edwards is the only one who can gain them. Does anyone really think that putting Cheney on TV for 90 minutes ever helps the Republicans at this point?

I really enjoy watching Edwards --- he's a master at this sort of thing. He understands that there are three levels to every presentation, and that a true master has to blend substance, style, and audience in a way that is both contradictory and complementary. He can be sunny and optimistic while attacking. That's a gift. That's why he was one of the most feared trial lawyers in NC --- he inspires empathy while attacking. He can go negative without anyone realize that he's going negative. (Traditionally, when you go negative, your favorables take a slight hit too.)

Unless something drastic happens, Edwards will win with the American people who watch. The real issue then is to win with the media, so the meme for those who just scan the headlines doesn't become that Edwards lost. That will be harder, but it shouldn't be impossible.

I think it will be a great debate.
