Hi Michael. The point is not whether there were differences in the justifications for the Russian, French or U.S. occupations in Afghanistan, Vietnam, or Algeria; the point was the reaction of the people of the occupied nation to the occupation. As you'll recall, the reaction grew more violent over time, not less violent. In addition the methods of resistance became more sophisticated and in each instance the occupying nation left licking it's wounds and without accomplishing its stated objectives.

I'd be curious to know why you believe we have the power in Iraq to not allow another "death to America" regime to be fostered? That was my point; that absent scorched earth tactics that decimate the population, occupation will not succeed. We agree that we need to declare victory and get out quickly.

On another subject, do you really think it's "presumptuous" on my part to suggest that the Iraqis could have ousted Saddam "on their own?" We're now facing suicide bombers and committed resistance, including Iraqi nationalists supported by substantial segments of the population. Did you see that level of committment in the Iraqi people to oppose Saddam Hussein? If there had been that level of committment do you think he would eventually have been killed or toppled, regardless of how brutal he was?

If a people aren't willing to take the risks and do what is necessary to rid themselves of a despotic leader, then maybe they weren't ready to move on or maybe their lives weren't as horrible as we were led to believe.
