lorne- Carl Sagan, in his 13 part "Cosmos" series, explained how religion was used as far back as the Pharaohs to control their people.
The Pharaohs basically had to control their masses by scaring them into believing that there were "gods" out there that would come down and smite them if they disagreed with their master's wishes. That's how the Pyramids were built.
Without religion the pure size of the "ruled" could very easily overcome their "masters", kill them and take their shit.
Religion was invented to control people, pure and simple. You name the religion, and then think how it has caused more wars and control over those who buy into it.

Islam is the religious soup 'da jour of our current discussion. We call them fanatics, but until all people realize how much their own destiny is in their own hands these wars will continue.
There is no better fertile grounds for mind control than believing in any Allah that will give you eternal life after death. Oh my they are so needy that they believe in their own respective Santa Claus's, the 72 virgins, eternal life... if they just behave.
The population of any nation that is so overwhelmingly wrought with famine, desperation and just heat alone is offered religion as a soothing remedy for their enormous pain and suffering.

Well I suppose I'm in deep shit now eh?
