Mentor Graphics' New IP Offering Speeds Chip Design for High-Speed Internet Access
Applications Span Telecommunications, Networks, Cable Modems
WILSONVILLE, Ore., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Mentor Graphics' (Nasdaq:MENT) Inventra(TM) division today announced Telecom Soft Cores, a library of industry-specific intellectual property cores required for faster system-on-a-chip design in the rapidly growing high-speed data and telecommunications markets.
The Telecom Soft Cores library offers a wide-ranging selection of standard interfaces and functions, eliminating the need for designers to continue reinventing existing standards. This library enables companies to rapidly integrate the functionality of multiple chips into a single chip, thereby reducing the power consumption, cost and size of their end products. The Telecom Soft Cores library is the only plug-and-play library to make cores of this type broadly available from a single independent source.
Typical products that will incorporate Telecom Soft Cores include ISDN terminal adapters, T1/E1-based network connections, subscriber line cards, xDSL, cable modems, switches, wireless base stations, private branch exchanges (PBXs), routers, bridges and videoconferencing systems.
Inventra to Offer Most Complete Set of Vertical Market Libraries
``Inventra is the industry's largest third-party provider of cores. Customers seeking timely and profitable results can count on Inventra for intellectual property that is reusable, verifiable and accessible,'' said Brian Barrera, Inventra director of marketing. ``Today's announcement marks a significant milestone for Inventra -- the evolution to providing intellectual property and services targeted at fast-growth markets such as high-speed data, wired/wireless, and networking. Look to Inventra to offer the industry's most complete set of vertical market libraries for customers.''
High-speed Internet access, consumer and business-driven telecommunications and networking are all demanding increased bandwidth and speed from the telecommunications network. This demand is clearly reflected in telecommunication semiconductors, with the market areas served by the Telecom Soft Cores showing growth rates ranging from 19 percent to more than 50 percent in 1996.
Expanded, Specialized Library Provides Single Source, Plug and Play
The extensive Telecom Soft Cores library contains cores for speech coders, protocol controllers, forward error correction, encryption, and modulation and demodulation. All of the Telecom Soft Cores are plug and play, thanks to the Inventra on-chip bus. This on-chip bus is processor-independent and enables designers to bypass traditional time-consuming bus design and complicated glue logic. In addition, specialized design services for the Telecom Soft Cores are available through Mentor Consulting, as they are for all Inventra products.
Telecom Soft Cores will enable networking companies to move into integrated wide-area networking solutions; telecommunications equipment companies to reduce parts count and increase data rates; and Internet access equipment companies to provide lower-cost, high-bandwidth access to the World Wide Web.
The Inventra Business Unit of Mentor Graphics is the world's largest independent creator and distributor of reusable intellectual property for the system-on-a-chip industry. The extensive Inventra product line provides EDA tool-independent cores, memories, physical libraries, embedded software and services. Reusable ``cores'' are pre-designed and pre-verified functional building blocks that enable the next major productivity gain for ASIC and IC design. Inventra's IP products lower the cost of implementing design reuse, allowing designers more time to focus on unique, value-added circuitry.
