We haven't used 1% of the resources we could be using, if we were really serious. Think of what the US put out during WWII, on a far, far smaller economic and population base.

No, they think it's impossible only because they don't think it's worthy of serious effort. If you can't do it fast and painless, fuggedaboudit. They think the stakes are low. They couldn't be more wrong.
