<<I oppose Bush. And I am disgusted by Bush's handling of the "peace"... but until we find a way to remove our troops I would like to see them get as much help as possible.>>

It's tough being a moderate. I feel that pain too.

Pete Peterson, in his must-read recent book "Running on Empty", theorizes that the flight to partisanship is part of a huge denial syndrome in the national political life. In his view, there is a huge elephant in the American living room. Which is that our entire future prospects are a lie. We have promised $100-150 trillion in retirement SS/Medicare benefits to the baby boomers (depending on advances in life expectancy), but we can only at the most fund $30 trillion. The boomers don't save, partly as a result of this fake guarantee.

Therefore, this country, over the next 25-40 years, faces a dramatic worsening in its standards of living and hence its position in the world. By 2050 China may well overtake us.

Peterson views the partisan polarisation as one of the ways we create noise and chaos in the present to avoid looking at the future. It' so much easier to attack the oher party (they spend too much, they tax too much) than to recognize that BOTH huge tax increases AND huge entitlement cuts, TOGETHER, are the minimum neeeded to avert a grey ugly twilight for this country.
