if ingested chemicals can alter one's mental state (which they obviously can), a body might be better served by choosing to remove the toxic input.

True but I think some (probably many) conditions are not caused by toxic imput, some of those can be effectively treated by drugs. This is true both for conditions in general and for mental/psychological disorders.

That still leaves plenty of questions about specifc treatments, which don't always work (or perhaps rarely work well) or cause harmful side effects.
