TLC,

I think you have touched on the premise of modern medicine. That is, abuse your body at will and we (modern medicine) will find a cure(usually a pill). Many forward thinkers reject that premise and follow the path of preventitive medicing, healthful lifestyle and the idea that we are each responsible for our own health and well being.

I have witnessed up close and personal the use of many palliatives including those for acute paranoid schitzophrenia. My anectdotal observations are that either the side effects or the masking of the 'problem' or, a combination of these two, negate and, most often, outweigh any positive effects. Diet and exercise are often the best we can do.

As to 'scientific studies'.....well, they are certainly for sale. I have a close friend that works for an electric tooth brush manufacturer(they're are two major competitors). She is revolted by the easily purchased scientific studies that each manufacturer touts as claiming the superiority of their product. A small sample of radio airwaves here in Seattle contains many offering to participate in 'free' studies for every imaginable ailment. At least they pay for them as opposed to the nazis but what about the ethics of these 'studies'? The 'scientific study' industry is just that, an industry.

As an aside to this rant I'll mention my current fav. The television ads that show the elderly cavorting in scenic or upscale spots. The voice over attributes this gemutlichkeit to a new wonder drug and urges us to ask our doctor. No indication of symptoms or disease, just ask your doctor. Go ahead and ask, we own</> him. And of course you have a right to this drug. End of rant.
