The regime change is not necessarily required. the regime certainly need to reform and that doesn't need to happen by force, like we did in Iraq.

That would be better than going to the war. but we have been trying that for years now (covertly) and haven't succeeded.

I stand corrected. I checked the number and found that Iran and Iraq have about the same amount of oil production (way below Saudi Arabia).
"That's not why it "all fell apart". If you recall, after Saddam's regime ran away in the night, there was a good ~6 months of relative calm. During this time, the Bush administration failed to execute its plan (if there was one) which would lead to a democratic, free Iraq. Iraq didn't just "fall apart", it was poorly managed (by us), and then "fell apart".
I doubt a better management then would have helped much - The premise itself was wrong and it would have bite us in some way, even if were better managed.

This is 'mostly' about "economy" is my thinking. Oil is just a means this administration thinks of, as a way to get there. I dont buy into this grand vision of freedom throughout the world vision at all. It doesn't matter who pushes this vision, I cant see it succeeding very much. Freedom is a lower priority than food and shelter and other basic necessities for a large percentage of the people of the world. A lot of people would and do give their freedom away to get some basis necessities met first. Just look at the number of workers in the middle east from the free countries (Indians, Bangladeshis, etc).
