Bullshit political correctness like that is nothing more than US academia wishing to create their own morality and be revered as the stewards and advisors of that invented morality. Much of it probably arises from academia's collective hatred of religion, both conscious and subconscious. They are singing your tune, and your knees are jerking in time.

I have not been actively surveying gay america in regard to the APA, but I have met probably more than my share of gay people through my ex-girlfriend from high school, who in college developed "Lesbian Until Graduation Syndrome." The thing about people who have been ridiculed all their life is that they have a good sense of self-deprecating humor. The ability to laugh at one's self is a virtue.
