Well, I think they mostly act in an economically rational manner... gas was really cheap during most of the nineties, abnormally cheap compared to it's historical norms. People bought a lot of gas-guzzlers during those years, but you can't really say they were 'wrong' from the point-of-view of personal economics. They got a lot of miles out of those vehicles before prices started going back up. Now, I hear the Toyota & Honda gas/electric combo vehicles are flying off the lots. People (en masse) tend to behave with their feet pretty much on the ground.... "Do you think they would drive a little slower or take off slower to conserve their fuel?.... no they would rather look at their dwindling disposable income and holler...." (See my comments above about those 'combo vehicle' sales. New models slated for sale over the next year, too.) "Gas is really cheap though...." Yep.... Right now it's at about it's historical average (adjusted for inflation.) "milk is more expensive," That's mostly because of government price support programs that keep milk prices above what a free market rate would be. "Perrier water is about 3 times the cost of gasoline....." (Doesn't it have a little gas in it?????? :)
