Long term bond rates do not impact consumer spending in the same way. Our dependence on foreign purchase of debt is a problem, however, where else are they going to go for a decent rate of return? I do think we will stagnate for a while, but the U.S. is far better at reinventing the system than Japan. The derivites market scares the sh*t out of me, it could turn into a huge LTCM.
