CNBC newsroom: SHARES IN NOVELL had surged 10 percent Tuesday in heavy trading on speculation the company might be the target of a takeover attempt, possibly by IBM Corp. But Schmidt said the company "is not for sale," although he refused further comment. "First of all, the company is not for sale," Schmidt said, adding, "I am not allowed to comment on any of these kinds of rumors." IBM has declined to comment on the rumor. Tuesday, Novell spokesman Jonathan Cohen had said that a higher profile for Novell since the arrival of new Chief Executive Eric Schmidt and new products may have been contributing to the recent spike in trading of the company's stock.
