The Labor Department report said the economy added 96,000 jobs last month. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had a median forecast of 148,000.

The jobless rate was unchanged at 5.4 percent, the Labor Department said. The government lowered its previous estimate for August by 16,000 jobs to 128,000 and said there was no quantifiable effect from hurricanes in the South.
