I honestly saw a big mistake coming when Bush said on TV in Dec 2002 that what he saw in the Iraqi submission of an accounting for WMD as being, I think he said, it doesn't look good, or to that effect. Taking down SH was a HUGE risk politically. Personally I think the operation actually went smoother than I thought it would, but even as an amateur military historian, I thought right off...not enough troops for city fighting and that Rumsfeld was dead wrong on troop numbers. Rumsfeld is the problem, not Bush IMO. When I heard prior to the invasion that Rumsfeld sent the original battle plan back to his generals telling them to be more creative (e.g. more risky) and use half the number of troops that problems were going to be in store. Air power was going to have to make up the difference. If it can't, then its going to be a huge problem. I knew from history that taking cities from civilians armed with only small arms is a very dangerous proposition. In Berlin the Soviets attacked with two armies and a total of 1M soldiers. Berlin was defended by civilians, the Waffen SS in limited numbers and Army troops. The makeshift defense managed to kill 100,000 Soviets.
