Ah, I wondered why the stock shot up to 23 this morning. There is bound to be a lot of competition in the net phone business. Overall, that is very good for product sales. The many competitiors will stir up awareness, knowledge, and comfort level among consumers to buy these units. Cidco has some excellent manufacturing management and facilities in place but has yet to prove how creative and efficient they can be in designing their units compared to the competition. They have been a major player in the caller ID market, an extremely though market, so that foretells well on their ability to manfacture efficeintly against worldcalss competitors. They even have major business selling caller ID units into Japan, so the fear that Japanese or other Far East consumer product companies have some built-in advantage seems not to be the case at all. The crucial thing for them to prove is the viability of their internet phone design(s), both from a manufacturing cost standpoint and from a creative and useful set of features that people will find most attractive. I'm sure that the company won't want to disclose the details of their products prematurely in this highly competitive environment, but that's what I'd like to know.

I think the stock could heat up on the expectation of the market becoming a big one. The telcos need an array of intenet phone products to compete against PCs and WebTV products. It is also a natural tool for them to extend their reach into the massive e-commerce market by playing on the current acceptance and familiarity people have with their phone system, directory services and yellow page advertising. These "franchises" that have been established through years of consumer advertising and usage are the backbones of the telcos business and it would be foolish if the Telcos didn't try to take advantage of them by massively extolling the familiarity and benefits to their customers (before they loose them to competing technologies).
