A group of provinces in a nation declared their independence about 150 years ago. Civil war resulted as the central government successfully conquered the rebel provinces. The cost in lives on both sides was high. It was essentially a 20th century war with 19th century medicine.

That war was the American Civil War.
The Confederacy lost 258,000 men out of a maximum of 1,250,000 in uniform (the low estimate of Confederate soldiers is around 750,000). The population of the Confederacy was about 9 1/2 million. For the 10 years following that war, the biggest single item in the budget of the state of Mississippi was artificial limbs for its war casualties.

Should Mr. Lincoln not have fought it?
