It seems fishy to me for Dr. Schmidt to say that he is not allowed to comment any further. "This company is not for sale" could be interpreted many ways and is as good as "No comment". I would say that "No comment" is a bigger indicator that the sale is most likely to go through. But to say that it is not for sale could imply that they are not going to sell for a low price and would like the bidder to up the price. Or the "For Sale" sign is not up on the house yet but negotiations are ongoing with the realtors (selling a house scenario). Or stated simply, they are not thinking of selling the company. It could mean anything.

Having been through companies/businesses that have been sold, what Novell has done in the last 6 months is very typical to prepare a company for sale. Cut the payroll and thereby increase profitability, go to the press with the promise of 1 or 2 promising/cutting edge technology product etc. And Novell has done all that. What helps the scenario is their low stock price.
