"When they later realized the place was just a derelict factory of some sort that had been abandoned for ten years, they went from utter jubilation to total deflation in about half an hour."

You are obviously talking about the huge complex found during
fierce fighting throughout Iraq.

FWIW, this is paragraph 3 of the FoxNews article.... "U.S. Central Command, which oversees the war in Iraq, said in a statement that troops were examining several "sites of interest," but said it was premature to call the Najaf site a chemical weapons factory."

Like Fox was alone in reporting it too.....

CNN.com: Pentagon officials: U.S. may have found Iraq chemical weapons plant
cnn.com

The 100-acre complex was adjacent to military barracks in the
middle of the desert, ringed by barbed wire & camouflaged to
look like the surrounding dessert from the sky. It was booby
trapped.

The tests on this complex did not confirm any banned WMD.

When that happened, the MSM immediately declared this
ridiculously expensive, oversized, camouflaged, barbwired &
boobytrapped complex as much ado about nothing. And, oh bye
the way, FoxNews misled America (and they are part of the
VRWC).

Chalk up another one for the MSM.

An Najaf CEA Depot

An Najaf is located in central Iraq (approximately 120
km south of Baghdad). The An Najaf Depot contains
87 intact earth-covered bunkers; 42 destroyed warehouses,
and approximately 99 revetments. An Najaf
Depot covers an area of 5 km by 6 km and is secured
by a 7ft barbed wire fence. The bunkers, located at
the northen end of the depot, are in four major groups,
each group consisting of fi ve pentagon shaped subgroups
containing fi ve bunkers each. The warehouses
are located to the south in rows of seven warehouses
by six rows for a total of 42 warehouses. All of the
warehouses were destroyed by unknown explosions.

An Najif ACP is currently under the operational control
of Foster Wheeler Tetra Tech.
• An item of interest found at this site was determined
to be an Iraqi copy of the Spanish Fuel
Air Bomb, and Surface-to-Air missiles. Bunkers,
destroyed warehouses, and the revetments were
exploited with no WMD weapons found (see
Figures 3, 4, 5, and 6).
