Monaco - Re: NY Times article on Merced

This article was written by John Markhoff, normally an excellent reporter on Silicon Valley matters.

This particular piece seems basically accurate but light on "meat". That is most likely due to tight information control by both Intel & HP.

First, let me address the issue of compatibility. HP & Intel have repeatedly said the chip will run BOTH PA-RISK (HP) and x86 (Intel) instruction sets. In October, at the Microprocessor Forum, Intel & HP will reveal a few initial details about this chip and its architecture.

As for speed, of course the chip will "bomb" if it executes x86 instructions slowly - that is probably why HP & Intel have been working on this so long - since early 1994 at least.

Second, Intel still has a large pipeline full of x86 designs - Katmai (Deschutes with AGP2 and MMX2) and Willammette - a huge honker targeted at the new 0.18 micron fab process for late 1998/early 1999 introduction.

Intel has many design teams in place and they are not about to commit corporate suicide - they didn't get to where they are without being adept at handling adversity.

A good example is the near 20-year old iAPX432 MicroMainframe chip(s) that Intel introduced to much fanfare in 1981. It was a commercial flop, but IBM had already designed in the 8088 by that time, establishing for Intel their "true" processor roadmap.

And that is x86 instruction set computing.

Intel will not be abandoning their Gold Mine while searching for a Diamond Mine.
