We can have both.

Your poem is lovely, but so sad. I am hopeful:

Heart of the Valley

I feel the pulse of this valley I see that it beats
Here and now

Then I look to the line at my doorstep
I want so to fill them
If . . . But. . . How. . . ?

Then I lift up my gaze to the forest
I long for the wild
And the free

The thundering heart that I hear now
Is beating so hard
Is it me?

The choices I see there are endless
And the promises made
Unfulfilled.

Do I see in this stretch to the ocean
A carpet of homes
We could build?

My heart feels the race and it quickens
Shall I turn to the crowd
In the hall?

Shall I say of the heart of the valley?
"Come with me, it beats
For us all."

For Wendy Herrett, who became for a while Forest Supervisor, Siuslaw National Forest, based in Corvallis, Oregon. I wanted to show Wendy that there were more choices and possibilities in her challenges than she may have realized. At the time forest management, which was my area of expertise, was very contentious.

Corvallis is derived from French, meaning “Heart of the Valley.”
