I don't think we'll know in our lifetimes. My theory is that all the players had reasons of their own that added pressure to invade.

1. The neocon reasons are spelled out in the PNAC documents. The Bush admin. is a hotbed of Zionist neocons.
2. Bush had the "daddy" issues - he could both best Poppy and "finish the job" that Poppy left undone - made him an easy sale.
3. Cheney knew he could feed Halliburton with the war.
4. Rummy wanted to try his "lightweight warfare" theories out.
5. They all convinced themselves we really would be greeted as liberators.
6. They convinced themselves that the oil would pay for it and then some, and maybe a taste for the appreciative cronies.
7. They would have a new place to put permanent bases to guard the oil that would allow them to pressure the Saudis, the REAL source of ME terrorism.

Anyway, that's MY theory.
