I encourage narcotics at times. Sometimes, tranquillizers will do. One should never fear the use of helpful medicines. But one should be informed and cautious. I had such debilitating disk problems years ago that I often spent weeks barely able to move without agony. Finally, I discovered that properly prescribed narcotics could kill much of the pain, allow the spasms to quiet, and allow the body to rest and to heal.

Of course, a good diet, daily exercise, and thoughtful supplements are the goal. But I would no more write off narcotics and such for the appropriate conditions, than I would write off penicillin for syphilis.
