Your entire argument on this point is based on an illusion of individualistic "self-sufficiency," including the implication that "what was good for my ancestors is good enough for me"--not to mention everyone else. Hopefully we have evolved somewhat in a couple hundred years to the possibility of realizing that it is in the enlightened self interest of the entire culture to have government sponsor and promote an educational process that provides the tools of managing one's life, including planning for the future. This amounts to an investment at the front end that might save alot of grief at the back end. And the demographics of the industrialized world indicate this reality rather compellingly.

Outsourcing this entire function to the "free market" has not and will not accomplish the task. The idea that this is solely an individual responsibility completely overlooks the reality that the degree to which individuals successfully address the issues that concern you creates benefit for all members of the society, not just your own life. The bigger question is whether we will ever fully implement an understanding that the function of government is to promote each individual reaching their greatest potential( in the environment that you suggest)--for the benefit of all, and because it is in the interest of all for us to do so.

Imagine what a mere 10% of the defense budget could do in this regard.
