I assume you understand that money always matters... and that French oil companies stood to make money off their contracts, and also that the country of France has outstanding and unpaid loans to Iraq.

(You probably also learned last week --- from the UN's 'Oil for Food' program investigation --- that several American companies and prominent individuals were profiting from their involvement with the program... not just French companies. For example, Chevron has been fingered for it's involvement... as well as a prominent Texas Republican contributor with large equity positions in El Paso Energy --- one of the same firms charged by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission with illegally manipulating energy prices to screw California and reap illegal profits.)
