Do you think people will continue to fund pharma and medicine ...if their returns are artificially restricted?

IMO this issue is exactly why we are experiencing problems with the availability of the flu vaccine in our country. There are only two drug companies who are currently willing to manufacture the current vaccine used by most physicians. (Used for high risk patients and children under 5).

The reason that there aren't more companies who are interested in producing this vaccine is because the risk of being a vaccine provider is high, and the reward is very limited.

There needs to be an incentive for a drug company to produce a product, and IMO patent protection of their products has to be part of this incentive to encourage research and development of new drugs.
