The Pope is not condemning Catholic politicians for upholding the law with respect to protecting abortion clinics and abortion doctors from violence and other illegal acts.

He is condemning them for not using their office to promote making abortion illegal. Voting in favor of abortion is a violation of the central tenets of the Catholic faith.

That's non-negotiable.

Catholic dogma does not condemn all wars -- there is a well developed ethical philosophy concerning just wars -- and well there should be, given the events one reads about in the Old Testament. Similarly, Catholic dogma does not say that murderers can never be executed.

However, Catholic dogma does say that abortion is always morally wrong, and it's quite strict. There is not even an exception to save the life of the mother, although the child can be removed from the womb if medically necessary, not intended to kill the child but save the mother, and all steps are taken to preserve the life of the child if possible.

You cannot be a Catholic and actively work to keep abortion legal.

If your conscience tells you to work for abortion, then you are a Protestant, and should not partake of Catholic sacraments. And if you actually work to promote abortions, you are excommunicated.

As I understand it, by voting in favor of abortion, Kerry is excommunicated.
