"Chairman Bill Gates is expected to make the announcement, which will preview of the Redmond, Wash.-based company's strategy to use spruced-up software to transform personal computers into powerful entertainment machines capable of replacing even the ubiquitous television set. ... the New York Times reported yesterday, in advance of the announcement. "Several manufacturers, including Linksys, a unit of Cisco Systems, and Hewlett-Packard, are expected to introduce versions of a product Microsoft announced last January called the Media Center Extender, a device that allows a television signal to be sent from a Media Center computer to a television in another room, by way of a wireless network. .... Still, it is an open question whether people want to watch television on their computers."
