I am in the beginning stages of getting a solar panel roof system for my home. I would not be doing this except that my state, New Jersey, has a rebate program to pay for 70% of the installation costs of up to a 10KW system (about 57, 175 watt panels with inverters). You are eligible if you are with certain area utility providers. I don't know how long this program will be available, so I want in on it now. Without it, it is $8000.00 per KW installed. With the program, a 4KW system has a cost to me now of $9600 instead of $32,000.

njcep.com This site has a great calculator for estimating the system.

The benefits I have learned are: net-metering capability, Renewable Energy Credits that can earn you money at so much per kilowatt capacity of the installed system, that property taxes cannot be raised because of the installation, tax credits and resale value of the home.

The question I am considering is whether to put up the expense for an off-grid backup which require batteries and charge controllers to flesh out this otherwise on-grid system.

Does anyone have experience with this personally. especially the issues of off-grid capability?

Thanks

Stan
