My Brother:

Re: <<And then what?>>

What do you want me to say?

In June of 1940, after the Fall of France, Germans were deliriously happy.... as would any People who belive they've not only escaped the horrors of war - which most adult Germans remembered all to well - but overturned the perceived injustice of the Versailles Treaty

In January 1941, at a time when Germany seemed to have won the war, Germans gave Hitler a tumultuous birthday celebration. They believed him to be infallible. Little did they know that he was a gambler who could never leave well enough alone.

The day after Pearl Harbour, 1941, with German Armies at the gates of Moscow, when Hitler unilaterally declared war on the United States without even requiring the Japanese in return to declare war on the Soviet Union, there was a shiver of apprehension felt by all Germans. Where was the Fuhrer taking them?

I take it you're angry with me for quibbling over this "minor" detail. But the lack of enthusiasm of Germans at the outset of WWII was an observation noted by all foreigners and journalists at the time; this despite efforts by the regime - and Goering - to stir up enthusiasm. It simply didn't work.

When you made your remark, I think you were remembering newsreel footage of Nazi rallies, etc.
