<it does claim that it is the government of an independent state> Taiwan has not declared independence from China and is unlikely to do so. It is clear what would happen if Taiwan did try to break away and become independent from China -- Beijing would exert full day-to-day control, something that up until now has not been viewed as necessary. Washington has no desire to see Taiwan declare independence and would not likely support Taiwan's effort if Taiwan attempted to break away from China. The whole notion of Taiwan trying to break away is so ludicrous that it is unlikely that sane people would have any interest in doing something so stupid. Taiwan's fate is tied to China -- the nation state to which it belongs. Nothing can change that.
