I am guessing that you don't really know anything about thios class of drugs or you wouldn't have made these comments:

"It is clear that my emphasis was on the rights of people to make choices as to whether or not to use and/or abuse drugs or other options in life. If competent people are being prevented from taking drugs or if they are being forced to take drugs...then their rights are being violated in my opinion."

Benzos are used in nursing homes for one main purpose, to control patients by numbing them to the point that they almost can't walk, can't remember their names or family and are far removed from their original personalities. Benzos turn people into zombies and alter peoples emotional responses. These people, most of whom are elderly anyway do not fully understand what these drugs do and that can hardly be called informed consent. Inform consent is the main issue here. Sorry but almost everyone who is prescribed benzos is not properly informed and has no idea the hell that they are going into as most doctors have no idea what physical dependency is unless they have been through it themselves and these docotrs almost never prescribe benzos to anyone.

Hmmmm I wonder why Halcion, a once popular benzo is now banned in most countries in the world. Can you explain that?

If you think that people should be allowed to make a choice whether they take these on doctors advice then why are various governments either banning certain benzos or re-classifying them as drugs of dependence needing triplicate prescription? Thats some choice.

Yes you are right, I am in favor of severely curtailing the use of these drugs in all but extremely severe cases and sorry, but 10% of the population is not in extreme danger of dying if they don't have them.

"Indeed, they will remind the doctor if their supply is running low."

Oh yeah! I wonder why?

"If you feel the need to judge and to label people who use benzodiazepines...please feel free to do so"

I'm not judging them at all. I am trying to help people get off them. Of course the vast majority will remain ill and never be able to get off them, especially the more potent ones like Klonopin and Xanax. Ask Noelle Bush. Her doctor cut her prescription and left her in a situation where she had to try to fake a prescription in order to stop severe withdrawals from taking hold or even worse, a seizure.

Your final statement in your last reply is the most ominous of all. It certainly DOES matter that people in benzo withdrawal realize that if they were prescribed the drugs for a medical condition that they are not to look upon themselves as addicts. If you can't see the difference and your contention is that people who are prescribed them for more than 2 weeks and become hopelessly hooked on them are now "addicts" then the doctor who prescribed them should be liable for turning someone with insomnia or anxiety into a drug addict. Hey, I like the sounds of that. I do think most doctors that turn patients into unknowing drug addicts should be sued. Anyway benzos are also muscle relaxants and are you saying that it is OK for s doctor to prescribe these to someone with some muscle spasms or tension and then ruin their lives because they can't get off them? How about someone who is prescribed them when someone in their family dies to help them be calm and the docotr renews the prescription?

My conclusion here is that although you are certinaly proficient in expressing your thoughts in a discussion like this, you are not thinking this through and don't see the whole picture. Comparing this to tobacco addiction is not equal because when a person smokes they do so with COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE because it is common knowledge that cigarettes kill.
Benzos are prescribed and cigarettes are not. Big difference.
