Good ruminations.

Reconciliation is always desirable as a long term goal. But the first order of business is often to disillusion the parties with the viability of achieving their goals without the need of compromise. Saddam, as a symbol of defiance who was believed to be bristling with WMDs and waiting out "containment fatigue", was a centerpiece of this aim at disillusionment. Those who think war is primarily about killing are mistaken. War is primarily about will, about resolve, about how much one can and will suffer and/or risk to achieve one's goals. The collapse of Saddam's regime, and the establishment of a democracy, or even a "quasi- democracy", combined with the routing of the Taliban and the destruction of the Al- Qaida infrastructure, goes a long way towards saying that it is dangerous to stir up the United States, and that is futile in the long run to persist in terrorist activities, which will only license us to more aggressive and destructive responses..........
