A watch list attached to a thread would certainly be better than nothing. Delayed quotes are fine, and it would also be fine if they only refreshed manually so as to help cut down the number of quote requests. I'd suggest a limit of a dozen stocks if you need a limit at all. Makes sense to limit to 10+ users and investment forums.

But the portfolios enabled folks to show what they could do over long periods, and they enabled some popular stuff such as the charity portfolio competition. Portfolios were one of the key features that distinguished SI from other "chat" sites. The VD portfolio and the thread surrounding it (no longer active) are what first attracted me to SI.

The portfolios wouldn't need to be anything fancy - people aren't looking for automatic split adjustments or anything like that. Stock symbol, number of shares, initial price (input), initial cost (calculated), current price, current value (calculated), profit/loss (calculated) and a calculated totals row is about it.
