Do you really?

Yes, really. I think patriotism is about acting for the good of the country when the country is threatened at great personal sacrifice if need be.

if Germans did not want to fight for Hitler, would you call them unpatriotic?

No, not at all. See the last paragraph of what I just posted to John. Presumably those who volunteered for Bush's war believe that we're on the right track and sufficiently threatened to be worth their sacrifice. If they walk away from the fight with that enemy still a threat just because their risk goes up, I don't find that particularly patriotic. I don't fault it, but I can't call it patriotic.

BTW, I have been trying to be careful, despite some strange syntax, to avoid calling anyone unpatriotic. Merely not especially patriotic. I don't think that anyone who fights in Iraq is unpatriotic, even if he quits the fight upon change of administration.

But for those who quit, I am reminded of the criticism heaped on the anti-war folks who are accused of wanting us to lose just to spite Bush. This attitude is reminiscent of that one. They're willing to give up their posts in time of war. Now, that'll show Kerry.
